DCEU is far away behind Marvel. But, Warner Bros. seems to keep up the distancce by releasing two entries to hit theaters in 2017. Two preceding DC Comics films receiving poor critical responses and divisive reactions among fans. In the wake of Batman V Superman’s largely negative reviews, hope was placed on Suicide Squad to be the first film of the DCEU that was generally well received – only for that hope to shift to Wonder Woman after David Ayer’s film also suffered poor reviews. Of course, Wonder Woman also bears the pressure of being the first female-led comic book film to hit theaters in over a decade – and the first superhero movie with a $100+ million budget directed by a woman, with Patty Jenkins at the helm. Fortunately, Wonder Woman is such a big success. Thanks to Gal, Jenkins and everyone behind the film.
The film starts with a World War I photographic plate from Wayne Enterprise. After that, Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman recalling her past and her home, Themyscira. That place is created by Zeus, as a hidden place for Amazonian. People there are all female with the purpose to protect humankind from Ares, the god of war. The little Diana is obsessed to become a warrior like her aunt General Antiope. However, Queen Hippolyta, Diana’s mother forbid her since she believed Ares will never return. At one moment, Diana meet (or help) an American pilot Captain Steve Trevor from airplane crash near coast of Themyscira. The Amazons engage and kill all of the German invaders, but Antiope dies intercepting a bullet meant for Diana. Steve then revealed that the world would be destroyed. Diana believed that Ares is responsible for that disaster.
Steve was actually a spy. He knew that a chemist Isabel Maru and General Erich Ludendorff invented a deadly gas poison. Diana insisted Queen Hippolyta to let her go with Steve. The two then arrived in London to deliver the information to Supreme War Council, including Sir Patrick Morgan. Steve and Diana recruited some people to interrupt the Ludendorff’s plan. Diana pushed the team harder, even when they were in the battlefield in village of Veld. After that, they infiltrate gala near the German High Command. Diana went rogue because she still believed Lunderdoff is Ares. Steve stops her because she will ruin the mission. Ludendorff unleashes the gas on Veld, killing many people including German soldiers. Diana killed Ludendorff but the war did not stop. Sir Patrick appears and reveals himself as Ares. He tells Diana that it is ultimately human’s decision to cause violence. He also tells Diana she is the true “Godkiller”. Steve sacrificed himself and carry the bomb gas to safe altitude. Ares convinced Diana to kill Maru. However, Steve inspire her to believe that humanity have good inside themselves.
I can say Wonder Woman is 90% DCEU and 10% Marvel. It brings darkness and soul of DC but it also has light and jokes of Marvel Cinematic. I think the film fulfills the heroic and mythic demands of that genre. It show me the beauty, strength and love of a female superhero should become. The plot is so wonderful. It is successfully creating a fantastic staging and an exciting climax. Overall, it is not just perfect for female audience but also for all men out there. Wonder Woman makes male viewers feel better about a woman saving them. Very Good!
