Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Comeback of Legendary Jack Sparrow

dead men tell no tales

Please admit it with honesty, the first installments of the “Pirates” franchise is very very good. Who can imagine a theme-park ride can be a highly recommended film? Only Pirates of the Caribbean can do that. madcap visuals, magical narrative and Johnny Depp are the reasons why the film was a big success. That spirit is long gone. Over time, the story is being so dark and muddy. The plots are sometimes thoroughly explained through the trailer released. But this year, it comes aboard with the fifth installment: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The story starts when 12-year old Henry Turner told his father Flying Dutchman to break the curse. He had a plan, which is to use Trident of Poseidon, but the father ask Henry to leave and never come back. 9 years later, little Henry is now working on a British Royal Navy warship. The ship is sailing toward the Devil’s Triangle and a shipwreck with undead sailors attacked the warship. The undeads were led by Captain Salazar. He and his people kill all the sailors in the ship but leave Henry to deliver the message to the legendary Jack Sparrow. In the land of Saint Martin, Carina Smyth has been sentenced to death because people said her as a witch. She planned to escape and she met Jack Sparrow robbing a bank vault. Her plan failed. The Royal Army had her and Jack. Later, Henry met Carina and helped her to escape and find the Trident.

Henry is making a distraction in the middle of Jack’s and Carina’s execution. The former Jack’s crew help him in exchange of some money. Together, they will sail the sea with the Dying Gull and search for the Trident of Poseidon. Fortunately, Carina has the map of the Trident but unluckily, Captain Barbossa team up with Salazar and his crew to find Jack. However, Barbossa has his own plan. He helped Jack, Henry and Carina to get The Black Pearl back in its original size. He does it for a reason: Carina is his long lost daughter. Shortly after, Jack’s crew then battles Salazar’s men. During the fight, they arrive at the Trident’s location, a small uncharted island. Salazar captures Henry. Jack and Carina fall down a cliff after she activates a path to the hidden ocean floor. Salazar possesses Henry to walk on dry land and steal the Trident. Salazar fight Jack in the body of Henry. After Henry is free of Salazar, he realizes that destroying the Trident means breaking all curses upon the sea. Barbossa sacrifices himself to take down Salazar. He fights for his daughter. Since then, Carina’s last name is no longer Smyth, but Barbossa.

When you look up Rotten Tomatoes and search “Dead Man Tell No Tales”, you should be disappointed. It only got 29% fresh, and most critics give the Pirates of Caribbean fifth installment a thumb down. I don’t know why, but for me, it is the best film in the franchise. I always like the way Johnny Depp portray the Captain Jack. He is reckless but resourceful. Best moment of course is the guillotine scene by the way. Pirates of the Caribbean 5 recreate the fun and extravagant set pieces of the original trilogy and pays respect to the original lore. It s a definite improvement over its waterlogged 2011 predecessor.
