If you have to choose one, will you choose your family or your career? Okay. Those two is very difficult choice. I personally don’t know what will I prefer. Both is important to me but frequently living means deciding one option. That is exactly what Yohan and Erwin feel in the film titled Cek Toko Sebelah. More than that, it also about the characteristics of a typical Chinese family. In Indonesia, a film that specifically focus on Chinese life is not much and this is one of them.
The story revolves around a typical Chinese family with two sons and a single father. The father’s name is Koh Afuk and the sons are Yohan and Erwin. Koh Afuk works as a shop owner in somewhere in Jakarta, Yohan is a freelance photographer and Erwin is a manager in a reputable company. Yohan feels his life screwed up after his mother passed away. Lucky him, he has Ayu as his wife. She sincerely helps Yohan making more money by selling a cake. In contrast, Erwin has much better life than his older brother. He can get scholarship in Sydney and he will be promoted as Regional Brand Manager soon. Not only that, he also has a beautiful and successful girlfriend named Natali. One day, Koh Afuk get collapsed because of the disease in his body. He thinks he can no longer manage the shop. So he asks Erwin to come and handle it.
Yohan obviously does not accept his father decision. He does not like father always prefer his brother rather than him. Yet as a firstborn, Yohan feels more right to the store. There is a reason why Koh Afuk does not give the shop to Yohan. His eldest son’s past is full of problems, so his trust does not come to his son. In fact, Yohan has a sincere intention to continue the grocery store belonging to his family. Erwin himself is in a dilemma because he wants to continue his bright career in the company he already worked in. The problem get worse when a property developer is willing to purchase the shop. Knowing that both Yohan and Erwin can’t run the shop, Koh Afuk sell it by the way. He fired all the staffs and let his competitor to get his customers. That situation makes him sick so Yohan and Erwin has to work together to cancel the deal. They have to make sure his father own the shop which he found since the ground up.
Actually the plot of Cek Toko Sebelah is complex. There are three story here. Koh Afuk-Erwin, Koh Afuk-Yohan and Yohan-Erwin. Making those three in the same line is very difficult. But, I think Ernest has done great job to make it so. I can feel Father-Son relationship in the film. The comedy is also worth-to-watch. Some scenes are very funny and I think people will laugh at that. But, because of the complexity, I think the editing process cut some essential scenes that should be in the film. Some comedic scenes are not necessary but they are there just to be called “comedy film”.
