Kingsman: The Golden Circle has yet to even hit theaters, but already talk of Kingsman 3 is beginning.
Matthew Vaughn may have been “hesistant” about making a sequel to The Kingsman: Secret Service, but with the second installment of the R-rated 2015 box office smash hit a few months away from release, the British director has hinted that there may be a third Kingsman movie in the pipeline. Per Variety, Matthew spoke at an event that was put on by 20th Century Fox. The director revealed that, while writing Kingsman 2, he and writer Jane Goldman already started mapping out Kingsman 3. He compared the second installment to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, saying that it will take you to a “cliff edge” before resolving in a third movie. Here is what he had to say about it
“By the end of this movie no one will predict where Eggsy ends up. And weirdly, Kingsman 2, when writing it we’re thinking about Kingsman 3 as well, which is odd… So this is sort of the bridge, if we can pull this off, if people go see it, to make another one.”
The first Kingsman was a surprise hit at the box office, and proved that there’s a pretty hefty audience for atypical action flicks with an R-rated sense of humor, in February, no less. It also helped pave the way for Deadpool, which sought to replicate Kingsman’s success with its own February release, wildly surpassing expectations.
Vaughn admitted that he wasn’t necessarily thinking of making a sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service in the first place, but suddenly came up with an idea worth doing and pursued it. The result is The Golden Circle, which finds Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and the Kingsman crew in shambles after their headquarters is destroyed. They must then go across the pond to their U.S. counterparts, Statesman, to team up and take on Julianne Moore’s villainous character.
