The Guardian of the Galaxy is just like a gamble for Marvel Studios and Disney. No one ever predict the unpopular Marvel hero with jokes and slapstick will pays off big in the movie business. But, we all know it does and it will be followed by another not-so-similar gamble. And it pays off again. Guardian of the Galaxy Vol 2 comes with similar formula but it adds some emotional touches in the middle and the end. Those makes it so new and so repetitive in the same time.
The film starts when Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Baby Groot are hired by Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign race. They have to protect valuable batteries from an inter-dimensional monster. The guardian want Gamora’s estranged sister, Nebula, in exchange of the battery. But, Rocket quietly steals some batteries. Sovereign attacks the Guardians’ ship with a fleet of drones. The Guardian escapes through field of asteroids when someone mysterious destroys all of the fleet. They stranded on a nearby planet but a man, revealed as the Quill’s father, Ego, followed them. He invites Quill, Gamora and Drax, to his home, while Rocket and Groot repair the ship and guard Nebula. Meanwhile, Ayesha hires Yondu Udonta and his Ravagers crew to recapture the Guardians. They successfully capture Rocket, but Yondu is reluctance to turn over Quill. His Ravagers team seems he is weak when dealing with Quill. His lieutenant, Taserface imprisons Rocket and Yondu. Baby Groot and Kraglin frees Rocket and Yondu. They destroy the ship but Taserface tips off the Sovereign fleet.
In Ego’s planet, Quill’s father reveals himself as a god-like Celestials. He travels the universe and eventually falling in love with Quill’s mother, Meredith. After Meredith’s death, Ego paid Yondu to deliver the young Quill to him, but Yondu never came back. He teaches Quill to manipulate the Celestial power within the planet. Suddenly, Nebula arrives at Ego’s planet and attacks Gamora. It leads Gamore to discover a cave with skeletal. Back to Quill and his father, Ego is actually just using Peter to access the Celestial power. Rocket, Yondu, Groot and Kraglin arrive to the planet, with many more Sovereign’s drones. Rocket makes a bomb and Baby Groot should plant it on Ego’s brain. The bomb kills Ego and the planet disintegrates. Yondu sacrifices himself to save Quill. The Guardians hold a funeral for Yondu. Dozens of Ravager ships attend it. They knowledge Yondu’s sacrifice and accept him again as a Ravager.
Personally, I think Guardian of the Galaxy Vol 2 is less charming than the original film. It is still fun in some parts, but the father-son relationship got it too emotional. I think Guardian of the Galaxy Vol 2 seems to lost the “surprise” thing from the first installment. It is normal but the Vol. 2 include more logical story and touchable characters in exchange of the shock of humors. The “Awesome Mix” tape is just awesome. It is stealing the screen. It offers new color for some memorable moments in the film. Maybe I will ask my colleague to make a post of the tape compilation.
