La La Land: Not as Good as People Said. And I am Wrong

la la land

Many of my friends told me that La La Land is interesting. I never believe it. I always have a doubt to watch such a musical film. That film usually makes me sleepy. I can’t keep my eyes open when watching people dancing and singing in front of my eyes. I just think that is not really suitable for the big screen. And then comes La La Land. Many people said it is a very good film. It is even nominated for 9 nominations in Oscar 2017. Like it or not, my colleague asks me to watch it. And here I go. I went to Cinema last week and grab the ticket. Of course, La La Land ticket.

The film starts when a young woman stuck in the middle of the traffic on a Los Angeles highway. That woman, named Mia, accidentally met Sebastian, a struggling jazz pianist. Their first impression goes rage because both of them have a bad day. Mia wants to be an actress but her audition goes bad. To cheer her up, Mia’s roommate, take her to a lavish party in the Hollywood Hills. At one restaurant, Mia overhears a beautiful Jazz music played by someone she just knew, Sebastian. Mia gave him a compliment but Sebastian brushes her off. But, months after that moment, the two start getting closer. Mia shows Sebastian around the cinema where she works as a barista, explaining her passion for acting. In return, Sebastian takes Mia to a jazz club, describing his passion for jazz and desire to open his own club. The two shares their true dream but they just have another failure toward their dreams.

Sebastian then suggests Mia write a personal one-woman play, after her another poor audition. In contrast, Sebastian becomes a keyboardist in a fusion jazz band for a steady income. Mia knows Sebastian is abandoning his dream. Mia leaves him because of it. In other days, Mia performs her play but everything is a disaster. She even overhears dismissive comments for her performance. However, there is a casting director attended her play. He invites her to an audition. Sebastian knows that persuades Mia to attend. 5 years later, Mia is a famous actress and Sebastian is a pianist in his own club. But, they are not together anymore. 🙁

I have to admit it. La La Land is not like what I think. It does not only a romantic story. It is also a story about reaching our dream. Both Mia and Sebastian told me that sometimes love and dream goes in different direction. It is up to you to decide. Mia and Sebastian chose their dream. In addition, the plot and the music are gorgeous. It is a well-made Hollywood musical film so far (despite the fact I watched very few films like this).
