When he is Hedwig

James McAvoy and Christian Bale are two actors that I admire a lot. They always do their best while playing their roles. You can see how good Bale in The Machinist and Batman trilogy. The character are very different but he can be both very well. Wow! The same reason make me idolized McAvoy. For the first time, I just only know him as the young Professor X in X-Men First Class. I do not know any other film he play into until I watch Split. In that film, he amazingly becomes, not only one but 24 characters, in one film. Wow wow!

Split starts with the kidnapping of three young women, Claire, Marcia and Casey. They are initially with their father, but someone mysteriously enter the car and make them unconscious. They woke up in a small room with a man who call himself as “Dennis.” From the outside, he seems normal but deep down, he suffered with both violent tendencies and obsessive–compulsive disorder. He likes to watch young girls dance naked, so he kidnapped them. A man named “Barry” later email Kevin’s psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Fletcher. He wants to conduct a meeting to talk about what happened with Dennis. Surprisingly, either Barry, Dennis and Kevin are the some person. Dr. Karen Fletcher had studied him and his alternate personality for long time. She discovered that these are just three out of 23 different personalities in Kevin’s body. Each of character exhibit distinct physiological and psychological profiles. Barry want to talk about the abduction to Dr. Fletcher, but Dennis take the role and stop Barry to tell the truth.

Back to the captive room. Dennis meet the girls, but in different identity, “Patricia.” He dressed like a woman. Even his personality is a woman too. However, Patricia still had violent tendency just like Dennis. In other day, Dennis became a boy named “Hedwig.” Casey befriend with him. She even trick him to help them escape but Hedwig is afraid of  Dennis and Patricia. Dr. Fletcher knew that there is something wrong with Kevin, Dennis or whoever he became. She notices discrepancies in his behavior and quickly realizes “Dennis” and “Patricia” want to take over “Barry” as the dominant personality. Dennis cannot avoid it for any longer. He told everything to Dr. Fletcher including Kevin’s experience with abusive mother and the rise of the 24th identity: “The Beast.” This identity is more violent. He even had physical strength like an animal. The only cure for this is by making him back to Kevin. However, “The Beast” already killed Claire, Marcia and Dr. Fletcher. The only person can save him is Casey, who actually had similar experience with the Kevin.

Conclusion

I cannot say anything except it is FANTASTIC!!! M. Night Shyamalan and Split successfully told me that people with Dissociative Identity Disorder exist among us. Until now, DID is one of the most controversial psychiatric disorders. There is no clear consensus on diagnostic criteria or treatment of it. However, the film also make me think that DID may be such a blessing. People with DID can uncover the true potential of human brain. It means you can be whatever you think you might be. Applause to James McAvoy. He successfully become Dennis, Kevin, Patricia, Hedwig and The Beast. His role is very convincing and make the overall film goes amazing.
