Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life

you won't never meet a principal like Mr. Dwight

Every stages of life have their own memory. Sometimes it is bad, sometimes it is very good until you will never forget for the entire life. But I am pretty sure that everyone has bad memories when they are talking about middle school. Like me, in middle school, I was stuttering when I talk to girl. Let me tell you this, when I talk to girls, my brain stopped working so I would mumble in front of them. For the boys in my class, it was very funny. They laughed at me so they always made fun of me. Yeah, Middle School is the Worst Years of My Life. However, then I discovered my new interest, writing. My story is similar with the plot of the film by the way.

The film center the story to the young man named Rafe Khatchadorian. He enjoys art and like to draw his imagination in his sketch book. However, his attitude is not so good so almost school kick him out. The last school who accept in the district is Hills Village Middle School. The new school is really really boring. The rule is so strict and the principal, Mr. Ken Dwight, is stubborn and cocky. He runs the school with iron will and forces students to comply with an extensive list of senseless rules. The worst is when he announces that school will held BaseLine Assessment of Academic Readiness (BLAAR). It is basically a standardized test to measure students’ academics ability. Mr. Dwight is enthusiastic with this but the students not. They are more interested with Rafe’s sketchbook. After that, the war between a principal and a student is officially starts.

Later, his brother, Leo, suggests him to get an even. Both decides to mess up Dwight’s rule book and makes several pranks in the school. While what they do is breaking the rule, people like and admire their job, including a smart little girl named, Jeanne Galletta. Like Rafe and Leo, she sees no important point in her school’s rule. The series of pranks never stop Dwight to start BLAAR. He goes beyond that by framing several students, accusing them for the mess in the school. As a result, they got suspend for something they do not do. That’s because he knows if he exclude those students in the test, the school’s average score is improved and he can secure his generous bonus like always. Rafe beg to him and tell the truth. Dwight refuses it but expel him out of the school. His mother and the fiance think to send Rafe to military school but the night before, Jeanne finds a video recorded Dwight’s setup. With this evidence, Rafe, Georgia, Jeanne gather the students to make things right once and for all.

Personally, I think Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life is entertaining. The film combine cartoon from Rafe’s sketchbooks with the live action. The sketches are alive and show how imaginative Rafe is. However, Mr. Dwight is still a star. His pointless dialogues and the way he thinks always make me laugh. Oh, do not forget about the pranks that is actually artsy. The weakness is the plot. I have watched many films with the plot like this, like Accepted, so why don’t go beyond the edge? Also, the an hour and 30 minutes something is not enough. It makes some parts feel weird because of the cut off.
