Discover the Life of Peculiar in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Jake meets the peculiars

Einstein once said, “Everybody is a Genius. But If You Judge a fish by Its Ability to Climb a Tree, It Will Live Its Whole Life Believing that It is Stupid.” I think Einstein didn’t refer his words to cleverness, brilliance or intelligence only. I do believe he stated those in wider circumstances. His words tells me that every children are special in nature. They have their own ability and capability. We have to accept that and treat them equally. It is not the matter of their peculiarity but how kind we are to embrace and respect their specialty and identity, just like Miss Peregrine. You can learn how she treated special children in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

The story is about a boy with a name Jacob Portman, or his fellas call him Jake. As a child, his grandfather usually told him stories about the magical home owned by Miss Peregrine. She was not an ordinary woman because she was able to transform herself into a bird. The home is filled with many peculiar children with special ability. From time to time, Jake starts to disbelieve the story because his parents and friends think he is crazy, especially after his grandfather’s death. His parents take him to Dr. Golan, a psychiatrist. She suggests them to get Jake to to Wales, the exact location where his grandfather told him years ago. He got there with his father who also want to finish his book. In wales, Jake discovers that his grandfather’s story was not wrong at all.

[/media-credit] the peculiars

At first, he meets the lighter-than-air girl Emma Bloom, an invisible boy Millard Nullings during the fighting in the bar. They take him to Miss Peregrine’s home. There, he is introduced to other peculiar children like Bronwyn Bruntley with her amazing strength and Claire Densmore, a girl that has a mouth at the back of her head. He also meets Enoch O’Connor, a boy that can temporarily restore life,  Olive Abroholos, a girl that can create fire, Fiona Frauenfeld, that has ability to control plants and Hugh Apiston a boy that has control bees. All peculiars are under Miss Peregrine’s supervision. Miss Peregrine herself is a An Ymbryne, a kind of peculiar that can change into one kind of bird and create time loop. Because of her ability, all peculiar children were safe in the loop even after Nazi dropped a bomb to the house. However, Hollowgasts” (or “Hollows”) threaten their peaceful life. They are the basically peculiars who are created after Mr. Barron’s experiment failed. In order to be immortal human again, Mr. Barron hunts peculiar to take their eyeballs. Jake is the only peculiar who can see Hollows. Because of that, he should lead other peculiar children to take Mr. Barron down as soon as possible.

Okay, let’s talk about the bad side first. I think the story is too complicated for children. I don’t think time travelling stuffs is a hard to follow even by teenagers. Other than that, the film offers magical characters and fantasy world. The story got an okay for me. The plot is too packed. There are too many elements to tell but it doesn’t make it less worth to watch.
