Snowden, When Escape is Your Only Choice

serving his country is his purpose

In 2013, people around the world are surprised by something from a young ordinary man. He told us the truth. He revealed the hidden side of US government and its intelligent. He is now the number one US government’s enemy but for the rest of the world, he is the true hero. He stands for democracy and freedom and because of that, he should move to one country to another country. He is stateless but I believe any country would thank him for what he have done. The name of this man is Edward Joseph Snowden and the film Snowden told us his heroic actions.

The films starts when Edward Joseph Snowden. For the first time he accepted journalists to interview him. The lucky journalists who had that chance are documentarian Poitras and journalist Greenwald. Three of them arranged the the session in Hong Kong. Their purpose is to reveal the truth of illegal global surveillance program by NSA. He is basically a tech constructor of NSA so he knows exactly how this organization operates. Back to 2004, his dream is about serving his country so that’s why he applied for US Army Special Forces. However, bone fractures forced him to do it in other way. He then applied for CIA in cyber-warfare division. Corbin O’Brian, the Deputy Director of CIA, placed him in “The Hill” to learn to build, delete and rebuild a covert communications network within eight hours or less. At one point, Snowden impressed Corbin by finishing that task in 38 minutes. Meanwhile, he met a girl named Lindsay Mill in a dating site. They are different in political vision but it is not a big deal. Lindsay followed Snowden to wherever CIA placed him into. In Geneva 2007, Snowden decided to resign from CIA because of principle difference.

He later joined NSA in Japan. His job was to build a computer program called “Epic Shelter”. It was basically a back up program but in practice, NSA used that to inject malware to most countries the US is currently allied with. He resigned again from NSA but join it again as a constructor from Bozz Allen Hamilton. At the same time, he got Epilepsy and Lindsay insisted to move to Hawaii because she thinks it would be better for Snowden. In Hawaii, Snowden worked in “The Tunnel”. Hi then realized that US Drone pilot used his program while launching a strike against terror suspects in Afghanistan. Getting stressed with the truth he faces, Snowden copied sensitive US intelligent data and leaked them through to the Guardian on June 5, 2013. He moved to Russia to get the protection after US government marked him as traitor.

Thrilling, amazing and simply brilliant. Oliver Stone makes me love this nerd guy for sure. The real story is complex actually but this film is simple enough to follow. It opens my mind that privacy in this era is a precious thing. Government is spying on us without our permission. Okay, enough for the story, let’s talk about the characters. Joseph Gordon Levitt make me sympathized with Snowden. He simply expressed Snowden’s fear, dream and worry. For me the bad side is very minor. I do not know how Nicholas Cage’s role as Hank Forrester is significant for the entire story. The best part is when the real Edward Snowden really appears in the last part of the film. Overall, it is just a worth-to-watch film on Theater. Very recommended.
