If your first language is not English, you might be confused with the word “robbery” or “heist”. Robbery and heist is somehow similar. I mean, heist is when you rob from an institution such as bank or museum. Now You See Me use that term “heist” because Daniel Atlas and friends steal something in a stealthy way and not get caught in the act. It is elegant and somehow resourceful. The point is, in my perspective, heist is the highest level crime. Very few people can do that, David Scott Ghantt is one of them. Beyond that, his action is noted as the biggest heist in American history. If you do not believe that, just see his legendary action in Masterminds.
Masterminds follow the story of David Scott Ghantt. David works as a vault guard in Loomis Fargo. He is typically a nice, fatty and sweet guy. His life is so normal, monotonous and boring. The only color for his black-and-white life is Kelly Campbell, his co-worker. David is actually falling in love with her but he can’t tell her because he has engaged with other woman, Jandice. They plan to wed but after he knew Kelly broke up with her boyfriend, David thinks he has a chance. Unfortunately, Kelly got fired and her childhood friend, Steven Eugene “Steve” Chambers, pushed her to rob a bank. To do that, Kelly has to flirt and manipulate David to rob Loomis Fargo. Kelly asked David to live in the Mexico as lovers.
David finally agree with the idea and rob the vault from the inside. He successfully takes $17 million from the vault, alone. Because of his good track record, no one suspect his crime. He drives the truck he used everyday to take the money out from the vault. Kelly and Steve wait outside, ready to help David if he needed. They told David to escape and go to Mexico so he can’t get caught. David went to Mexico alone. He live peaceful and beautiful life in luxury hotel until he became the most wanted man in United States. David escaped for the second time, tried to call Kelly for help. Steve told Kelly that everything gonna be alright. It makes Kelly live in feeling guilty but in contrast, Steve now live his newly wealthy lifestyle.David realized that Kelly and Steve took advantage of him. Kelly betrayed him cruelly. David then threaten Steve to transfer his money but Steve refuse it. Instead, he send off Michael Aaron “Mike” McKinney to kill him. Surprisingly, Mike regarded David as his brother. David was still alive and decide to go back to US since Steve kidnapped Kelly. With a grudge in his heart, David demanded Steve to pay back what he is done. He brings Steve to confess in the front of FBI and proved he was the mastermind of the crime.
Just for your information, Masterminds loosely bases the true story of the Hillbilly Heist in 1997. But the approach is comedic enough to entertain you. At first, I expect it could be like Now You See Me 2 but I put my expectation too high in the sky. There is little gun fire and explosions like any action films out there. Instead, the film inserts as many funny elements as possible. Some jokes itself is absurd to be laughed at, but some are not funny at all. This film include many slapstick and dumb scenes. The fight between Kelly and Jandice in a discount department store is my favorite, though. The setback is the pacing. It makes me frustrated because it is too fast. The dialogues are mostly in high speed, especially Steve. It is inconvenient for people like me.
