Humans are social creatures. We are made to work together and socially attached with one another. We cannot live by ourselves. We need help by our closest family or I can say neighbors. People who live next to us are our family. We should treat them well and they will do the same to you. But, how if your “closest family” are involved in a high espionage activity? I bet your life will never be the same ever since. This situation is brilliantly captured by an action comedy film with the title Keeping Up With the Joneses.
The story is about Jeff and Karen Gaffney. They live a beautiful and perfect life. They are a typical suburban people who embrace quiet and peaceful environment. Jeff works in HR department in a local aerospace plan (MBI if I am not mistaken) while Karen is an interior designer with only one client. One day, they have to drop off their sons for a summer holiday. Because of that, they start thinking that their life is so boring until a vacant house across their home is suddenly bought by mysterious buyer. The buyer are Tim and Natalie Jones. At the first sight, they seem like a perfect couple and the best neighbors ever. They are friendly, glamorous, and of course, having a good look. They have traveled many beautiful places in the world so many people are glad to hear their story. However, Karen becomes suspicious when she sees Tim is snooping around Jeff’s workplace. Because of that, the way she looks the Joneses would never be the same.
The Joneses are not like they claim to be. Tim and Natalie are spying on us since their arrival. Feeling terrified with what their neighbors do to them, Jeff decides to contact his head of security. But it is too late. They are now officially involved with the international espionage case related with a top secret powerful chip that can be very dangerous in the wrong hand. After not-very-long investigation, Tim and Natalie find that Jeff’s colleague Dan Craverston is the one who sells the chip. He sells it to the international arm dealer called Scorpion because of financial pressure. Since Scorpio is difficult to trace, the deal between the dealer and Dan Craverston need to be accomplished. Jeff and Karen should go undercover and pretend to be Dan Craverston and his wife, Meg Craverston. The Joneses promise the will be right behind them when everything goes bad. Without they realize it, there is now a strong bond between the Joneses and the the Gaffneys.
IMDb gives it 5.8 out of 10 and Rotten Tomatoes gives it only 20%, but I have different opinion here. Keeping Up with the Joneses is 50% comedy and 50% action in around 133-minute duration. The jokes are not vulgar nor absurd but they are funny enough to make you laugh. The spying stuffs are also handled well. The gunfire, the fight and explosion elements are making this considered as a spy film. The drawbacks are the antagonist. I mean the bad guy should not easily beaten up even for a comedy. Also, there are some unimportant scenes included, like the weird interrogation part. Overall, what I really remember is the hot and sexy Natalie Jones aka Gal Gadot in lingerie! Hahaha.
