Are you a Potter fans? If yes, you might really missed the magic and wonderful things made by the very successful author J.K Rowling. After the seventh financially and critically successful, she decides to end the Potter story. She makes the hardcore fans that grow up with Potter and Hermione really really sad. Many people on the planet asked Rowling to continue her wizarding world. In return, she create the eighth Harry Potter series in the form of play, The Cursed Child. However, it is not enough. Not everyone like to see a play but many many people like to go to Theater. So, in this year, She writes the whole new world of her magical story, Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them. She insists to call it a sequel nor a prequel. Instead she use the word “extension” to describe the film she writes.

The film take place in 1926, 70 years before the original Harry Potter series. The story starts when wizard Newt Scamander come to New York city and see the protest from New Salem Philanthropic Society. This protest led by Mary Lou Barebone, an ordinary no-maj that want to make people realize that witches and wizards are around them. Newt is not interested at all until a Niffler escapes from his suitcase. He tried to capture it back but a No-Maj named Jacob Kowalski mistakenly carries off Newt’s suitcase. Looking up the mess in the city hall, Tina Goldstein arrests Newt and bring him to the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA), hoping that she can take her position back as before. However, President Seraphina Picquery and Auror Percival Graves dismissed the case. In the same time, Kowalski release some of the magical creatures out of the case. Newt and Tina have to take them back before they mess the city up like what Obscurus did recently. On the other hand, Auror Graves approaches Credence Barebone. He offers Credence a freedom from her his abusive mother, Mary Lou. Graves want to make Credence as a host for Obscurus.

Tina then takes Newt and Kowalski in her apartment because they don’t have place to stay. There, Kowalski meet Queenie, Tina’s sister and fall in love with her in the first sight. But the three can stay any longer because MACUSA members believe that the creatures inside Newt’s suitcase are the reason of the Henry Shaw Jr’s death. As a punishment, the suitcase and creatures are to be destroyed and Jacob’s memory will be erased. But, they escape and try to fix the mess. In Credence’s house, the Obscurus reveals its true self. It kills everyone in the house except Credence and his sister, Modesty. Knowing that Obscurus kills the senator, Graves come to see Credence. After seeing the killings, Graves refuse to be a mentor for Credence. That makes the Obscurus unleashes itself on the city in a rage. Tina and Newt try to make Credence calm down, but Graves attacked them. He did that because MACUSA protect No-Majs more than themselves. After the destruction, President Seraphina Picquery fears it is too late to keep the magic world hidden but Newt release his Thunderbird with a potion to erase all New Yorkers’ recent memories, including Kowalski.

Conclusion

As the title says to you, the beasts in this film is fantastic. A giant Thunderbird, a naughty Niffler, Erumpent and Bowtruckle are incredible. CGI made them real and amazingly beautiful. However, the story is complicated. There are too many conflict in one single film. The Obscurus, Gellert Grindelwald and the escaped beasts make the film lost focus. There are too many contrasting tones in 133 minutes of duration. However, the Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them is still worth to watch, especially if you want to see the wand in action once ever again.
