Science bases its beliefs in patterns, logic and everything that can be seen. People use that term when describing how everything works. People use that term when they want to model the world they live in. FYI, he word “science” itself comes from the Latin “scientia,” meaning knowledge. In other words, it takes observation, study and experiment to prove the reality around us. In most cases, science forces something to have mathematical models so that we can predict the future. It makes us to not realize how small we are in the vast universe. It makes us think we know everything. It make us as arrogant as Doctor Strange.
The film follows the story of Dr. Stephen Strange, a brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon. He did amazing surgery to save people live but ironically, he could not help himself after he had a terrible car accident. The accident made his nerve terribly broken. He cannot use his two hands properly and because they are shaky every time. He did many surgery to make his hand back but it results nothing. The former lover Christine Palmer tries to help him move on but Strange still have faith in his two hands. At this point, Dr. Strange starts to believe the impossible even though has scientific background. He meets Jonathon Pangborn, and asks how he can mysteriously walk again after diagnosed Paraplegia. Their conversation later directed him to Kamar-Taj in Kathmandu, Nepal.
In Kamar-Taj, Master Mordo give him not-really-warm welcome because he still shows his arrogance in the front of The Ancient One. At the first sight, Strange feels pointless to meet the Ancient One but after she revealing the astral plane and other dimensions such as the Mirror Dimension, Strange admits he knows nothing about the world he lives in. Later, Strange is taken in by another sorcerer under the Ancient One, Master Mordo. He trained Strange to reveal his inner power. He also reads many ancient books in the library, he learns that everyone in Kamar-Taj has to protect the Sanctums in Hong Kong, London and New York from Dark Dimension. In contrast, the former arrogant sorcerer before Strange, Kaecilius, planned to summon the power of Dormammu from the Dark Dimension to earth. Kaecilius wants an eternal life so that people will not feel lost anymore. Kaecilius and his followers take down London and move to Hong Kong. Strange and Mordo fight them back and turn back time with The Eye Of Agamotto.
I have to admit, Doctor Strange is visually stunning. The film can reveal how other dimension looks like. Personally, it is better than Inception in term of visual effects. However, the problems are in the story and characterization. The story is too packed. It is meant to include the whole story of Doctor Stephen Strange in 1 hour 45 minutes. The lack of time information makes it worse. How can Strange be able to use high level spell as well as Eye of Agamotto and Cloak of Levitation so sudden? Also, the bad guys seem too weak. Kaecilius is not a badass villain, he just a sorcerer that lost his faith in The Ancient One. No more than that. The jokes also did not work out in some scenes. It is better to keep the serious tone rather than insert some silly jokes.
